Ara Pascis Augustae, 13 BC

The Ara Pacis Augustae is the “Altar of Augustan Peace”, built-in 13BC for the roman emperor at the time, Augustus. Who had just returned from a victorious campaign against Spain and Gaul?

The structure is 10.5m(ruffly 34.4ft) in length and 11.6m(ruffly 38ft)in width and 7m(ruffly 23ft) in height. It also has 6 different pictures or “Reliefs” on it each depicting different parts or pieces of Rome. A couple of the things depicted in the reliefs are:

  • Acanthus: A Leaf plant, that symbolizes regeneration.
  • Swans: Standing on either side of the acanthus plant is 20 swans. Swans were the sacred bird of Apollo, who is Augustus’ patron.
  • Bucrania: Skull of an ox, which represents sacrifice.
  • Garland of Fruit: Which represents abundance and plenty.
  • the Imperial family, Senators, and officials.

Another interesting fact about the “Ara Pacis” is that it was first located on the “Field of Mars”(Campus Martis). Ironically it is a military training camp, which shows Rome to always be prepared for battle, but they are at peace with themselves.

I hope you’ve enjoyed these few facts about the Ara Pacis Augustae, The Altar of Augustan Peace.
